If you want to be a professional shopper you are going to need to hit the vintage fairs and estate sales. Luckily, there are a few coming up today and this weekend and next- so mark your calendars with these dates.
First one to type into iCal is the Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show is next Friday and Saturday October 21 – 22 at the Metropolitan Pavilion on 18th Street. It only comes around three times a year – so get in early and peruse the booths with speed. It is the event where thrifters and collectors meet – so be ready to stand your ground. Bonus- some of my favorite vintage boutiques and dealers from New York will be there including Edith Machinist and Amarcord. Should be one stop shopping.
It will be followed next month by the Gentleman’s Vintage Show, which sounds stellar and rare occurrence.
Not to be out done, the West Coast is doing their vintage show this weekend – Vintage Expo in Santa Monica, today and tomorrow. This fair travels around on the left coast and has been around since 1988! The Expo gives space to some serious dealers and has some rare ancient pieces on show.
All the way across the pond, there are vintage fairs all over the United Kingdom. Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair seems pretty grand – and there are endless dates. When I get over there I live for the vintage section of Portobello Market – surprisingly authentic, varied and affordable – even though we get the short end of the stick when it comes to the pound. The vintage jewelry is not to be missed there – some amazing up-cycled pieces especially. And we cannot forget that the mother country has eras on us and thus tons more vintage to dig through.
One last one to put on the calendar for tomorrow is the Brooklyn Vintage Crawl. It goes through Williamsburg and Greenpoint which both have some great spots to hit up- and since it is a crawl you can certainly stop for a drink. There is nothing I like better than drinking and shopping. Here is a handy map to follow the route.
