Weekend Recs : Vienna 1900 – Style & Identity
Check out Neue Galerie’s special spring exposition on German and Austrian art. We consider this museum one of New York City’s small hidden gems. In fact, we must say it is one of the most elegant. The ” Vienna 1900: Style and Identity” expo aims to reveal a common thread running through the fine and decorative arts in turn-of-the-century Vienna: the redefinition of individual identity in the modern age. The exposition will run until June 27th and we expect to see artists such as Gustav Klimt, Joseph Hoffman, Alfred Kubin and many more. Check out a preview…This major exhibition at the Neue Galerie, and its accompanying scholarly catalog, promises to shed new light on the material expressions brought forth by Austria’s profound crisis of cultural identity. Considering ornamented surfaces across the media of painting, fashion, architecture, music, and decorative objects alike as key sites for the negotiation of self, psyche, gender, and sexuality, the exhibition will portray the visual power of a historical moment that sought to mute distinctions between the fine and decorative arts.
