Fashion Flashback : Martha Graham

As the news drops for the Martha Graham Dance Company, announcing its spring season; the 85-anniversary season, no less, at Licoln Center – we are obsessed with the woman herself.  Also we can’t wait to see the costumes by Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta. But it is her graceful style and her clever clothing choices that compliment movement so well – and frankly, her outspoken demeanor. Here are some memorable quotes from the grand dame herself : “What people in the world think of you is really none of your business.” Amen! And “The only sin is mediocrity.” More words of wisdom and great costumes after the jump…..
“No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction; a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are great because of their passion.”

“No artist is ahead of his time. He is his time. It is just that the others are behind the time.”

“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.”

“In 1980 a well-meaning fundraiser came to see me and said, ‘Miss Graham, the most powerful thing you have going for you to raise money is your respectability.’ I wanted to spit. Respectable! Show me any artist who wants to be respectable.”

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”

The Martha Graham Dance Company announces its spring season, seven performances presented by Paul Szilard Productions, Inc. and Michael Brenner-Sundance Productions, at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center on Broadway at 60th Street, New York City. The program includes a major new commission, a revival of Robert Wilson’s 1995 Snow on the Mesa, as well as immortal works by Martha Graham as befits this, the 85-anniversary season of The Martha Graham Dance Company.
