Weekend Recs : Remembering 9/11
I know it is Fashion Week and all that business as usual, but for us born and raised New Yorkers September 11th, is a day of sadness. If you were here then, you will know how I feel about it, and why I am not gong to see Alexander Wang‘s show, as sad as I will be to miss that. Instead I will be at the Tribute in Light, details after the jump…Tribute in Light
Saturday, September 11, 2010, dusk to dawn in New York, NY.
The Municipal Arts Society will once again present the Tribute in Light this anniversary.
Beginning at dusk on Saturday, September 11, 2010 and ending with the dawn of Sunday, September 12, 2010, the famous and beautiful Tribute in Light will shine in remembrance of those we lost in the terrorist attacks. Sunset on the night of September 11, 2010 is expected to occur at 7:11pm EST; sunrise at 6:34am.
Tribute in Light first appeared in the sky on the six-month anniversary of the attacks. Tribute in Light was designed by John Bennett, Gustavo Bonevardi, Richard Nash Gould, Julian Laverdiere, Paul Myoda and lighting designer Paul Marantz.
To produce the Tribute in Light, eighty-eight 7,000-watt light bulbs are arranged in 48-foot squares reminiscent of the towers of the former World Trade Center. The lights shine 4 miles into the sky and can be seen from as far as 30 miles away. The Tribute in Light is the strongest shaft of light ever projected from earth into the night sky.
Tribute in Light is assembled each year near the World Trade Center site. A private ceremony for MAS members is planned immediately before the lighting of the memorial on September 11, 2010.
