Alfred Stieglitz New York + Everybody Street

Fashion, fashion, fashion = boring boring boring. Let’s talk about art! For the first time in nearly 80 years, legendary early twentieth century photographer Alfred Stieglitz’s iconic New York City photographs will be displayed together as part of the groundbreaking, new exhibition “Alfred Stieglitz New York,” at Seaport Museum New York in Manhattan. The exhibition opens September 15, 2010 and runs through January 10, 2011. Stieglitz – a central figure in the history of photography and modern art and husband of artist Georgia O’Keeffe – lived in New York City for most of his life and chronicled its dramatic transformation into the archetypal metropolis of soaring skyscrapers, subways and electric lights. More after the jump….As part of Alfred Stieglitz New York, noted filmmaker and photographer Cheryl Dunn nods to Stieglitz through a unique and groundbreaking film that delivers an intimate portrait of some of the most important New York photographers to emerge since the1930’s. Her cinematic compilation includes interviews, photographs, and candid footage of the artists, exploring their
lifelong dedication to New York as their photographic subject. From the poignant images of Bruce Davidson, Mary Ellen Mark, and Rebecca Lepkoff, and to the celebratory photojournalism of hip hop historians Martha Cooper and Jamel Shabazz to gripping imagery by Clayton Patterson, Bruce Gilden, and Jeff Mermelestein, to the historically significant 911 images of award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz, Dunn’s film documents a range of shooters with the same passion for New York. In Dunn’s words, “The film paints a true, simple picture of each photographer… Whether you have only 5 minutes to watch, or 45, the film holds resonance and is anchored in Stieglitz’ intent to bring to light the artistry of photographic love
for this city.”

“Stieglitz essentially gave birth to the concept of street photography over 100 years ago” said Pam Bristow, Executive Producer of Everybody Street and Special Projects consultant for Seaport Museum New York. “While each photographer has a distinct point of view, examining the red thread that links hip hop and graffiti chroniclers like Jamel Shabazz and Martha Cooper,
contemporary masters like Davidson and Lepkoff, and Alfred Stieglitz is fascinating. The film also gives visitors of the exhibition an entirely new context in which to think about Stieglitz’ work.”

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
