Put Your Hair Scraps To Use
If you care at all about the environment the situation with the oil spill in the gulf has probably been upsetting you for weeks. Since the higher tech solutions attempted to stop the damage are yet to work- booms, a type of sandbag, have been the only defense thus far. Today on Ecouterre we learned that both hair and used nylon pantyhouse can be reappropriated to make very absorbent booms. Matter of Trust, a San Francisco-based nonprofit collects landfill-bound locks from over 300,000 salons and barbershops throughout North and South America, China, and India. The left over hair is then needle-punched into hair mats or stuffed, sausage-like, into nylon hose to create booms. They look sort of gross, as you’ll see after the jump- but they do mucho good.
