Fashion Flashback : Nina Hagen
Before Lady Gaga, M.I.A., Dale Bozio or even Wendy O Williams there was (Jewish- who knew?) German musical visionary Nina Hagen. An operatic child prodigy by the age of 9, she grew up protesting the East German government (her grandparents died in a concentration camp) and started forming punk bands in the mid seventies. Her style both in fashion and music was over the top theatrical, startling and clearly, genius. Being punk, reggae and dance pop, she clearly liked to mix mediums as much as she changed her rainbow colored hair (way before Manic Panic was readily available), slathered on the thick and outrageous eyeliner and lets not forget her wildly bold costumes too. More importantly than all that, she used her voice to speak about feminist issues (see the video after the jump) and she is proof that our theory about Lady G (note- we LOVE Gaga) being a true meme.
