What we’re into; Pee-Wee’s Playhouse
Paul Reuben’s Pee-Wee’s Playhouse was one of the most cutting edge children’s TV series of all time. The show was based off his HBO comedy special and the Pee Wee movie Directed by Tim Burton. We have been loving on the show since childhood, but the visuals have been inspiring us so much lately, we decided to share the wealth.
The experimental art direction, set design and costumes of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse were insanely clever and creative. These elements of the show created a psycedelic fantasy world and referenced the 1950′s, early children’s television and art history. Amazing people were involved in the production including Mark Mothersbaugh, Cyndi Lauper (who wrote and sang the theme song) and the animator April March. Actors like Laurence Fishburne and Phil Hartman were regular characters. The show also employed different types of film making techniques including stop motion and claymation (click this!!!!! you’ll love it) done by the Animators of Wallace and Gromit. If only today’s TV was more like this.
