Denim – Causing Deep Disorders In National Psyche?
George F. Will writes in today’s Washington Post a summation of Daniel Akst’s Down with Denim from the March 20th Wall Street Journal, which criticizes American’s for being too casual and “looks bad on almost everyone who isn’t thin, yet has somehow made itself the unofficial uniform of the fattest people in the world.” Quoting Akst again, “This is not complicated. For men, sartorial good taste can be reduced to one rule: If Fred Astaire would not have worn it, don’t wear it. For women, substitute Grace Kelly.”
Not everyone has the money to dress like Fred or Grace, nor do they have the lifestyle. Akst (pictured above) comes of as an upper class elitist who thinks everyone should be jaunting around in their sunday best, everyday – and he giving fashion advice? I think not. Here are some reasons we live in and love denim -
