Somali Pirates – Swab the Deck, with Your Duds
Submitted by claudia on April 10, 200914 Comments
The Pirates in Somalia have created a situation that is no laughing matter. We have noticed they are quite stylish (in that pay to look poor kinda way) but not in the the typical “pirate” way – no eye patch, Vivienne Westwood or puffy shirt in sight. These modern pirates are making (ok, stealing) some major money, we expect that they should be dressing with a more Adam Ant/shiver me timbers flair. Instead they are wearing mandals. We made some comparing and contrasting looks from the last 500 + years, after the jump.
The Classics
vs The Somali Style
Definetly we are for the classics!

Somali pirates rule… I love the idea that there are still “pirates” in 2009. Their style is totally unpretentious too. And those amazing African smiles; they are so cute I could just eat them!
Wow, this is offensive.
Come on Ginger, it’s unapologetically vapid. I’m not interpreting it seriously, and neither should you. Every post can’t be “Penis Nose.”
according to family lore, my uncle was a pirate. in the caribbean. [really i think he just transported unmentionables via big white boat]
& he wore these fantastic hawaiian shirts – unbuttoned with silvery chest hair peeking out.
come to think of it.
he was kind of awesome.
Well I don’t think we can say that the Somali Pirates “have created a situation that is no laughing matter.” These Somali fisherman, most of which have lost their source of livelihood because of the foreign policy or action of the E.U and co., are human beings reacting to their tragic situation. I don’t mean to say that pirating is morally right but it just doesn’t seem fair to assume that they just created an awful and dangerous situation without justly accounting for their entire narrative.
Not mention…
They do still dress pretty raawwww! (I am sure Urban Outfitters will jack and market that head wrap any second now) And the bright red puff pants ROCK!
Touche Elo, but while they didn’t create the circumstances, they did more or less create the current situation. Either way, the Navy Seals came in yesterday and wiped those toothy grins off their pirate faces with superior firepower. (R. Lee Ermey voice)
RIP – 3 pirates.
I agree with Elo. EHHH, they didnt create the circumstances. Because the E.U and U.S ruined their means of living they resort to piracy.
And its that kind of “kill em all” attitude that Ehhh demonstrates that creates these force-terror-resistance relations not the other way around.
To quote the queen pirate of them all (M.I.A).
Get Yourself an Educatiooooooon!
You can tell from my first post that I am fully IN LOVE with Somali pirates. And I did clarify that they didn’t create the circumstances, they created the SITUATION. This particular situation. That’s a distinction 4 dat ass. I was just being simplistic. It’s old as time to debate the culpability of impoverished people driven to crime, but ultimately, in the purest sense, they are responsible, and there are consequences. If there weren’t, it wouldn’t be piracy. And did I mention I love Somali pirates? Your argument is akin to someone catching a possession case and telling the DA that the CIA brought crack to South Central in the 80’s to fund the Contras, so really you’re just a product of government corruption. It doesn’t work like that. responsibility makes the world turn. Anyway, if those particular Somali pirates just kept sailing on by when they saw that American flag, they’d probably be good right now, but they had to push the envelope. These colors don’t run, ya heard? They’re still gonna get their pirate on, and look good doing it, and next year one of them will probably be like a model or a rapper or something – a DJ at very least. Wait a second, is this mooooot?
This is the result of the white man’s war on Muslims and the Islamic faith. Notice these are people of color, white man is still very racist so this is the price one must pay for being a jerk! I support these valiant individuals and I trust their adventures will be successful and throw fear into the hearts of racist America and European white fascist capitalistic pigs!
Try again Richard Neva, the only people who ended up paying a price were the pirates themselves. And what do you call valiant about pirates who waylay ships delivering aid to other impoverished areas?
I have to disagree. When we talk about accountability we always bracket of a “situation” and attempt to hold those involved fully accountable. Thats really not fair especially when the persons involved are coming from a long genealogical line of of poor international policies and decisions made by people who hold major international sway. You cant hold the pirates responsible for the “situation” unless you account for the power relations that they emerge from (and continue to act as agents within?)
And I refuse to glorify every ship the pirates “waylay.” Many of the ships they pursue are also E.U ships collecting information or transporting “classified unmarked goods” (according to two New York Times reports). Many of them are even fancy European tour boats- wonderful article on Somali Pirate/ cruise industry relations in Februarys Vanity Fair.
Perhaps its best not to say only one particular people pay a price or that this situation can somehow be fully fleshed out using examples that are similar but not particular enough to be parallel. We should try to complicate this as much possible!
I have to agree though- they are extremely trendy not only for their nautical fisherman savvvvvv-E- but also because they really know how to work a cruise ship crowd.
Touche, Elo.
Besides being Devil’s Advocate though (my fav activity) all I was really trying to point out was that even though certain behavior can be easily contextualized, it can’t be forgiven or permitted by that same token. Otherwise you have complete mayhem and anarchy. You have good points though, it’s gotta start from the top.
It sure does! But not Topshop for sure- sexy pirate wear apply only!
I am LOVING the political savvy, here! Who knew that fashion-followers were so SMART?!? Keep it up!
